John Ayscough (1858-1928) received a rave review from the Irish Times for Mezzogiorno: a "novel of absorbing human interest, full of clever conversation and vivid description of unfamiliar scenery" with a singularly well constructed plot, and an "intimate study of two fine natures and a third that is morbid in its strength."
