The purpose of this workbook is to help the foreign learner to become familiar with and to practise English idioms, either with or without a teacher. Nearly 500 idiomatic expressions are presented and practised in the 20 units, each of which deals with 20-30 idioms on a particular theme or in related functional areas. In any one unit most idioms occur at least twice (i.e. in two of the five sections) and over half of them are practised three times. The learner sees every idiom used in context, either as part of a conversation or in a short text, and there are various ways in which meaning is deduced and defined. (The last two units are slightly different, being devoted to proverbs and common sayings.)
