The absence of a native cultural tradition led the artists of the newly independent United States to turn to Europe and neo-classicism for their early examples. Reinforced by successive waves of immigration, and profoundly affected by both Cubism and Futurism, modern American painting has been buttressed by established tradition. Artists such as Ray, Shahn, Hopper, Davis, Tobey, Gorky, Matta and many others have endowed it with a strength, passion, inventiveness and range unequaled anywhere else at the present time. In architecture, Europe was again a formative influence, but the discovery by the Chicago School of steel framework and the demands of an expanding urban population culminated in the development of that most characteristic of American contributions to architecture - the skyscraper. Artistic development in both architecture and painting is presented here, illustrated by 87 full color pictures.
