Jozsef Rippl-Ronai enriched Hungarian art with a large and varied ceuvre. His close association with his contemporaries such as Serusier, Denis, Vuillard, Bonnard, Puvis de Chavannes, Gauguin and Maillol, had a definitive effect on his art. Rippl-Ronai composed in planes, outlined his dark-coloured surfaces with tense, refined, wavy lines, and lent a "decadent" elongation to his forms. His themes, expressing evanescent moods, are taken from the quotidian world. Judit Szabadi's introduction and the selection from the artist's own writings offer an insight into the greatness of Rippl-Ronai as both man and artist.
