THE illustrations are all taken from photographs, for many of which I am indebted to friends and brother officials, who served with me in the districts mentioned in the book and I take this opportunity of acknowledging their kindness in giving or lending copies which have enabled me to illustrate the book more fully, and with the more interesting of the illustrations it contains a momentous telegram from Calcutta....
