But the knowledge that the Chinese wear tails me olive-eyed, cat birds nests, and consider bears paws the greatest delicacy, no more explains this people than beafeating accoints for the history of the English for it is not from the eccentricities of people we understand them, but by our knowledge of those principlcs which they esteem most highly, and which they are always redy to promise, though perhaps slow to practice -for it is only a smal minority in any country which is found honestly endeavoring to emmy in their life, up to the measure of their ability, those principlcs of right conduct which all but universally professed by that country.....
