The young Londoner, Victor Hazard leaves his native England to arrive in Castleton, Vermont in the fall of 1821; he stands in defiance to the deforestation of the wilderness and the eradication of predators to accommodate the burgeoning flocks of Merino sheep. A rogue catamount torments the industrialist Zachary Halliburt, and Victor gains a mentor in Colonel Lewis, a revolutionary war hero; they join forces to supply cadavers to the newly opened Castleton Medical College - the exhumations vividly detailed. In Part Two of the book, Victor and his family embark on a Medicine Show, the traveling Yankees encounter eccentrics on their wagon trip southward via the Champlain Canal and the Hudson River and meet menace upon entering the slave states.
