Jean Louise Finch, better-known as "Scout" from Harper Lee's classic novel To Kill a Mockingbird, is now a middle school teacher in Savannah, Georgia. She and her husband, Phil Harris, have a 12-year-old daughter, Annie, who is currently in Jeanie's seventh grade class. In this stirring novel, Annie becomes friends with a classmate, Sara, who has post traumatic stress disorder because of sexual molestation, and she unintentionally aggravates one of Sara's symptoms. During the school year, Sara also becomes friends with and gets advice from Dara, an adult neighbor who is separated from her abusive husband. Dara's friend and PTSD-counselor, Lorie, helps Sara with her flashbacks, and in the process, the girls learn that everyone has his or her own "cross to bear." They also discover that lessons learned from life challenges can be used to make positive contributions to the world.
