My book is dedicated to the memory of The Third Division, 18th Corps, Army of the James, Richmond, Virginia 1864. This group of soldiers fought in eight Black regiments designated as The United States Colored Troops Infantry. They were the first and only all Black Army ever to fight on American soil. Fourteen Black soldiers from the Third Division won the nation's highest honor which was The Congressional Medal of Honor. They won this medal for their heroics in the Battle of New Market Heights in Richmond, Virginia on September 29, 1864. This was truly remarkable in that only about 24 Black Union Soldiers won this medal during the entire Civil War. To put things into perspective, the number of Congressional Medals issued to these Black soldiers for one battle equals the total number of Congressional Medals issued to Black soldiers in the Spanish American War, World War I, and World War II combined.
