Annie, an eleven year old girl has outgrown her pony Patrick, a once naughty ex-circus pony, now a Pony Hunter Champion. She trades him for an ex-race horse, she names Alley. Annie learns how to train a race horse to be a riding horse that jumps fences. The experience teaches Annie about herself and relationships. She has some success at local horse shows then moves them both to a bigger barn and learns to compete in nationally rated horse shows.
