I looked at him beside me--so strong and unafraid. December, 1926: a time of great uncertainty weighed heavily on the Chinese city of Foochow. Against a backdrop of rumored armies, ambitious political leaders, and rebellious students, and amidst the creation of a new China, Ralph and Elizabeth Shrader arrived in China as missionaries and educators. With the help of other British and American missionaries, the Shraders began to build a life in Foochow. They had been planning for years to make this great adventure, despite the bewilderment they faced from family and friends.
