A woman from the city, Helen, has just moved into the house next to the mayor and his flamboyant wife, Lila, to research small town life for a book. Lila is delighted to find Helen is single as she embarks on starting up her wedding planning business. Lila is also pleased to see Daniel has become a frequent visitor of Claire, who is keeping busy caring for twelve-year-old Sarah and six-year-old Abby, two of the eight McRoberts children who have been divided among neighbors due to an emergency. Claire wants to help both children, and she has a lot to learn from Abby, who can see into the souls of others and befriend anyone she encounters. But just as Abby begins to bring the town together, adults all over town notice small items missing from their homes, causing everyone to point fingers.
