Patsy Warner loves her career in law enforcement-until she is assigned as the child abuse officer for her department in northwestern Oregon. When it becomes obvious that she can't protect all the children who are victims of child abuse and other trauma, she turns in her resignation and moves back to the family ranch in Wyoming, where her sister, brother-in-law, and niece and nephew live. She can't seem to get the victims' faces out of her mind, but as soon as she returns to the ranch, she again finds herself staring into a small face full of fear.
