A whimsical dreamer, Dannie Brenner lives with her single mother and aspiring-model older sister in New York City, and she's fed up with her commute to school, her science experiments, not fitting in, and never having the freedom to do what she wants. She escapes her mundane life by delving into the world of books and often skips the bus on her way home from school to visit Belvedere Castle in Central Park, eager to let her imagination roam to distant lands and daring deeds. One day she catches a glimpse of a cute boy in a frog T-shirt, but he gets lost in the crowd before she can get closer. Upon unearthing a dusty book among her mother's bookshelves, Dannie finds her great-aunt was its author, an elderly woman who claimed to live in a castle. Fantasy abruptly collides with reality and sets in motion a chain of events that turn her life upside down when she discovers a baby frog hiding in her premixed salad and her mother receives notice that her aunt wasn't lying.
