Her vacation seems doomed until she finds Patti, one of her students recently snatched from the school grounds by her non-custodial father. When she discovers that Patti is very ill, she convinces the child's father to take her to the hospital. Once back at home, Kathleen becomes very involved in the lives of Patti and her family. Her boyfriend, Edward Connors, doesn't agree with her involvement, an involvement that eventually leads to a rift-possibly unmendable. When she runs into an old friend from high school, gossip in the small timber town spreads faster than chalk dust from beaten erasers, and touches the teacher.
