The story opens as Sara the heroine learns the devastating news that she has been adopted. Her true past is totally unknown to anyone. The grief, desperation and frustration drive her to put aside her life, hire a detective and learn the real truth of her heritage. As Sara sleeps, she becomes telepathically linked with the past as seen through the eyes of her true mother. Sara understands none of this. As the evidence unfolds, Sara and the detective trace a plot of deception and murder through the streets of low life to the top of criminal power. She learns the true identity of her parents and realizes that she would have been far better off without this hateful knowledge, which she feels shall haunt her for eternity.
