Chaplin Howard Carpenter (1835-1887) was an American Baptist missionary in Burma and Japan. His father was a Baptist minister. Carpenter graduated from Harvard College in 1859 and from Newton Theological Institution in 1861. He was appointed to Burma (Myanmar) by the American Baptist Missionary Union (ABMU). After five years of teaching in the Karen Theological Seminary, he was placed in charge of the Bassein Sgau-Karen mission of about seventy churches. Briefly serving as president of the Rangoon Theological Seminary in 1874, he returned to Bassein in 1875. There he established a highly regarded school, building the facilities from Karen contributions. Carpenter developed strong views on the matter of self-support and published them widely. Unable to convince his superiors of this strategy, he resigned from the ABMU in 1886.
