Vicky Griffiths has grown up as an only child in a single-parent family in Coventry, an industrial town in England's Midlands. She is only 14 when her mother is killed in a car crash. She goes to live with her only relative, her grandmother in South Wales. But Vicky's grandmother has a weak heart and has to go into hospital for a by-pass operation. Vicky stays with the family of her best friend Anne while her grandmother is in hospital, but there are complications. Will her grandmother recover, or will Vicky - now 15 - have to be put in a children's home? If only she knew something about her father...
