Pip has lost both his father and his mother. On a visit to their grave, he meets a run-away convict who is to change Pip's life. Pip has one wish in life, that of becoming a gentleman. His wish becomes an obsession after he falls in love with Estella. His poor uneducated background is taken away when a mysterious person gives Pip enough money to make his dream come true... In GREAT EXPECTATIONS we see Dickens' deep understanding of the British attitude towards class and background.
