Not illustrated. 1857 Excerpt: ...the kind of road most commonly in use, that in which the rails are secured in chairs resting on cross sleepers; and it is in the construction of the chairs and fastenings, that the improvements are introduced. It should, however, be borne in mind, that their application is by no means confined to wooden sleepers, but they may, with equal advantage, be used with an iron, or any other kind of sleeper.
