The amount of lime to be applied varies with the flow and with the character of the sewage, which are very irregular. To meet this difficulty of irregularity, a test-office has been erected at a point on the main outfall-sewer, a short distance below the confluence of the subsidiary main sewers near the Wallsitch. The sewage is tested for sulphuretted hydrogen every ? hour, day and night, by taking a gallon of sewage in a stoppered bottle, and adding 40 grains of caustic lime.
