Ashton Warner was a slave, native to the island of St. Vincent's. His narrative, Negro Slavery Described by a Negro: Being the Narrative of Ashton Warner, a Native of St. Vincent's was published in 1831 shortly after his death at "about twenty-four years of age". It was written that he "possesses very prepossessing manners and appearance. His amiable disposition and natural intelligence are striking proofs of what the African is capable, were his mental powers suffered to expand under the genial influences of civilization and Christianity. Claimed as a slave under peculiar circumstances, Ashton has enjoyed the unwonted privilege of not having been subjected in his own person (at least not habitually, like the unhappy field negroes, ) to the cruel and degrading punishments which form a prominent and characteristic feature in the discipline of a West India sugar-plantation.
