Martin Farquhar Tupper (1810-1889) was an English writer, poet, and the author of Proverbial Philosophy. In 1837 appeared his first series of Proverbial Philosophy, a long series of didactic moralisings. This work, which spread its authora??s name far and wide, was met at first with moderate success in England, while in the United States it was almost a total failure. In 1845 Tupper was elected a fellow of the Royal Society. He received the gold medal for science and literature from the King of Prussia. His works include: A Modern Pyramid to commemorate a Septuagint of Worthies (1839), An Authora??s Mind (1841), The Crock of Gold: A Rural Novel (1844), Heart: A Social Novel (1845), Probabilities: An Aid to Faith (1847) and The Twins: A Domestic Novel (1851).
