From the English novelist and short story writer, whose writings can be seen as critiques of Victorian era attitudes, particularly those toward women, with complex narratives and dynamic women characters. Her first novel, Mary Barton, was published anonymously in 1848, and has recently received attention from professors who wish to expand the canon of British literature known by American students.
