Defoe's Journey from London to the Land's End gives accounts of England as it was in the days of George the First, "days certainly are gone when, after a good haul of pilchards, seventeen can be bought for a halfpenny, and two gentlemen and their servant can have them broiled at a tavern and dine on them for three farthings, dressing and all." Daniel Foe was an English trader, writer, journalist and spy. Defoe is notable for being one of the earliest proponents of the novel, as he helped to popularize the form in Britain. A prolific and versatile writer, he wrote more than 500 books, pamphlets and journals.
