The Iraq War in Anbar Province, also known as the Al Anbar campaign was a counterinsurgency campaign waged in the western Iraqi province of Al Anbar between the United States military and the American-appointed Iraqi allies against Sunni insurgents. The campaign lasted from 2003 until 2008, although the majority of the fighting took place between April 2004 and September 2007. The Iraq War in Anbar Province initially saw heavy fighting primarily between Iraqi insurgents and US Marines, although in the later years the violence would be primarily between pro- and anti-government Iraqis.
