Picture the scene: Prince Charles is the Prince Regent, following problems with the Queen's health. Labour is in power - the old-fashioned, socialist kind - and there's an election coming up. The Labour government wants to depose the monarchy and make the country a republic, and this is a major plank of its campaign. The Tories aren't happy, of course. Traditionalists to a man, they don't want any interference with this benevolent old tradition, despite the unpopularity of the ruler in question, and their senses are sharpened to the scent of treason.
