The enlargement of the European Union opened vast opportunities for Central and Eastern European countries. As the European family grew in numbers, the issue of economic impact came to the agenda. The fear that East Europeans shall steal work from Germans, French or British was tremendous and therefore the importance of enlargement was not valued enough.
