The time spent in another culture changed us and gave us an understanding of the life of missionaries--the loneliness they faced at times and the fears that sometimes came, especially when they heard of the sickness of a family member they couldn't reach. They had a sense of family with all the others who were there for the same purpose, and while not related, their children called the others "Uncle" or "Aunt." The parents themselves seemed as close to the others as brothers and sisters would be. We didn't know we were going to Nigeria to become a part of a great extended family, but that's exactly what happened, and that family seems as close today as it did thirty-six years ago.
