Our ancestor from Kentucky, George Hume, being of Scottish descent, was a sharpshooter and fought for the Confederate Army in the Civil War in the 6th Infantry Regiment. Our German ancestor, Frederick Metz, was a stowaway on a ship coming over from Europe. When he was caught, he had to learn a trade to pay for his voyage. He became a shoe cobbler. Our ancestor, James McGavock, was born in Antrim County, Ireland, near a town called Glenarm. He came to port in Philadelphia and started work as a farmer. When James landed in Philadelphia, four fellow Irishmen were about to be sold into indentured servitude because they could not pay what they owed for their passage. James spent all of his money to ensure that they wound not get sold. He also did well for himself, purchasing many large pieces of land.
