In 1920 a small community of Canadian artists officially became the Croup of Seven. The catalog from their first exhibition stated: "The seven artists whose pictures are here exhibited… are all imbued with the idea that an Art must grow and flower in the land before the country will be a real home for its people." As the group extended its membership and influence, a national art did indeed bloom, reflecting in stunning images the beauty and grandeur of the Canadian landscape. Finally, in 1933, the group dissolved in favor of a society that supported all the country's Modernist artists: the Canadian Group of Painters.
