Like Leon Russell's "Pisces Apple Lady", it was inspired by Chris O'Dell, a former Apple employee, and variously assistant and facilitator to the likes of The Beatles, Derek & The Dominos, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and Santana. Written in 1971, the song's lyrics provide a light-hearted insight into the Los Angeles music scene, as well as the growing crisis in East Pakistan that would lead Harrison to stage The Concert for Bangladesh in August that year. Despite its popularity, "Miss O'Dell" was unavailable officially for over thirty years after this 1973 release, until its inclusion on the 2006 reissue of Harrison's Living in the Material World album.
