Debbie was the fourth tropical cyclone of the 1961 Atlantic hurricane season, and developed from a weather system near Cape Verde on September 6. While passing near the Cape Verde Islands, the storm was blamed for a plane crash that killed 60 people. After becoming a tropical cyclone, Debbie intensified into a hurricane six hours later. Over the next five days, Debbie maintained its intensity while moving generally west-northwestward over the open ocean. On September 11, the system turned northward and finally intensified further, ultimately reaching Category 3 status that day. On September 13, Debbie had quickly weakened back to a category 1 hurricane over the central Atlantic and turned westward.
