Born in Wenchang, Hainan Province, he joined the Communist Party of China in 1926, and took part in the Northern Expedition, the August 1 Nanchang Uprising, the Baise Uprising (????), the Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945) and the Chinese Civil War.
