The Battle of Osijek (Croatian: Bitka za Osijek) was fought between the Croatian National Guard and forces loyal to the Croatian government on one side and the Army of the Republic of Serbian Krajina supported by the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) and various Serb paramilitary units on the other, during the Croatian War of Independence. The town was surrounded from the north, east and south. The goal of the rebel Serbs was to capture Osijek and annex it to the puppet state of the Republic of Serbian Krajina. The bulk of the fighting was carried out from July 1991 up to spring 1992, when the JNA gradually withdrew from Croatia. However, the sporadic shelling of the city continued up until 1993, and sometimes even in 1994.
