Wyandot individuals would travel great distances to gather for mass burials every time a large village changed location. Dead bodies were taken out of their first graves and cleaned in preparation for a reburial in a new communal location. It had both a religious motivation and diplomatic benefits, and was a time for mourning and celebration. Customs evolved over the centuries as populations migrated and increased but continued to follow traditional beliefs about the afterlife. The arrival of Europeans continued this process and added new aspects, namely the important giving of material gifts that became a central part of these festivals.
