Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (IICB) is the modern incarnation of the first non official center in India for biomedical research established in 1935 as Indian Institute of Experimental Medicine. It was rechristened several times - in 1956 it was named Indian Institute of Biochemistry & Experimental Medicine and in 1982 it got its current name Indian Institute of Chemical Biology. The vision of the founder, Dr J.C. Ray, was the advancement of the state of human knowledge related to the basic aspect of the causation and prevention of diseases of special concern for India especially tropical diseases and also nutritional biochemistry and physiology. He realized that the health problems of a country can be properly addressed only through a deep understanding of biology.
