They speak languages that belong to three main language groups: Indo-Aryan, Austro-Asiatic, and Tibeto-Burman, with Tai languages fading out after being replaced by Aryan languages. However, ethnic Tai roots run very deep, not just in modern Assam, but the former Assam which corresponds to all of Northeastern India, as far back as 1980s some 8 million people claimed Ahom descent (more than a third), though some intermixing of races is expected. India has attempted to dilute the Mongoloid influence in favor of Aryans, over the decades, resulting in ethnic tensions.
