The official name of the gymnasium is Secondary School-Gymnasium named after U. Matkarimov (Uzbek: U. Matkarimov nomli o'rta maktab-gimnaziya, У. Маткаримов номли ўрта мактаб-гимназия; Russian: Средняя школа-гимназия им. У. Маткаримова). The gymnasium is also a boarding-school: some students, mostly from the neighboring villages, study and live at the gymnasium during the school year. The school bears the name of Usmon Matkarimov (1922–1989) who served as the head of Isfana's kolkhoz for many years and contributed greatly to the development of the town. Education is free at the gymnasium and classes are offered for grades 5 through 11.
