The club was formed with the union of two clubs – Carcavelinhos Football Clube and Uniao Foot-ball Lisboa. Atletico has played 24 times in the top flight, the last being in the 1976-77 season. The club has won eight major trophies since its establishment in 1942 of which the include the Portuguese Second Division in 1934-35, 1938–39, 1944-45 1958-59 and 1967–68, the Portuguese Third Division in 2003-04 and 2005–06 and the Taca de Portugal 1927-28. They currently play in the Segunda Liga after gaining promotion in the 2010-11 season from the Portuguese Second Division. The club finished 11th in their return to the Segunda Liga in the 2011-12.
