It is located 26 nautical miles (48 km) southeast of the city of Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius. The airport was previously known as the 'Plaisance Airport', it was renamed in memory of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, the 'The Father of the Nation'. The airport is set to become a regional hub, it has direct flights to several destinations in Africa, Asia, Europe and is home to the country's national airline Air Mauritius. A new passenger Terminal and a Parallel Taxiway is currently under construction, it is expected to be operational in January 2013.
