The series started on the NEC PC-8801 in 1987. The games take place in a fictional world with some geographical resemblance to Earth, and chronicle the adventures of Adol Christin, a red-haired swordsman, and his companions. Ys titles have appeared on the MSX2, FM-7, Sega Master System, Sega Mega Drive, Sega Saturn, Famicom, Super Famicom, Nintendo DS, PC, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, TurbGrafx/PC-Engine CD-ROM, cellular phone, and on the Wii's Virtual Console service from Nintendo.
