An Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) in India is a person specifically licensed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Government of India, to certify the airworthiness of an aircraft, powerplant, aircraft system or component after maintenance. Any aircraft engaged in public transport including aerial work and flying training shall not be flown unless it has been maintained in accordance with such requirements as may be specified by the Director-General; and all such maintenance has been certified by appropriately licensed engineers, approved or authorised persons by means of such a 'certificate' as may be prescribed by the Director-General.
