The Ponce de Leon Cup is currently a fan-based competition between Puerto Rico Islanders, Fort Lauderdale Strikers and Tampa Bay Rowdies of the NASL created in 2006 by Ivan Santiago, Bismarck Robles and Francis Novoa. Their intention was to create a fan-based cup similar to the Southern Derby stateside for Puerto Rican and Floridian teams respectively. The original hand crafted cup had Ponce De Leon standing on a soccer ball pointing forward with his left foot on a silhouette of Puerto Rico and his right foot on Florida. According to Santiago, The cup was stored in a family warehouse in Guyanabo, and lost in a fire in 2010.
