The first five seasons were broadcast in Canada on Citytv with the show moving to CBC for an encore of season 5 and continuing with season 6. Murdoch Mysteries is also shown on Alibi in the UK. The show stars Yannick Bisson as William Murdoch, a police detective working in Toronto, Ontario in the 1890s who makes use of what was then modern forensic science to solve crimes. Each episode revolves around one or more explicit historical references to an actual 19th century person, invention, event, or book.
