The Spanish general election of 2011 took place on 20 November 2011, and was the 11th general election since the Transition to renew seats for both chambers of the Cortes Generales: 350 seats for the Congress of Deputies and 208 of the 266 seats of the Senate. It was a snap election, called by Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero four months earlier than expected amid the 2008–2012 Spanish financial crisis, after his government's perceived failure to cope with the worsening situation of the country's economy. The decision was announced on 28 July, with the official calling of the election and dissolution of the Cortes Generales taking place on 26 September. As a result of President of Andalusia Jose Antonio Grinan's decision not to call a snap election in Andalusia, this was the first time since 1996 that a general election was not held concurrently with an Andalusian regional election.
