Marxist–Leninist atheism (Russian: Марксистско-ленинский атеизм) is a part of the wider Marxist-Leninist philosophy (the type of Marxist philosophy found in the Soviet Union), which rejects religion and relies on a materialist understanding of nature. Marxism-Leninism holds that religion is the opium of the people, in the sense that it causes people to accept suffering on Earth in the hope of eternal reward, and therefore Marxism-Leninism promotes atheism and argues that religion should be abolished. Marxist-Leninist atheism has its roots in the philosophy of Ludwig Feuerbach, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Karl Marx, and V.I. Lenin.
