Fort Yellowstone (initially created as a temporary post known as Camp Sheridan in 1886) was established in 1891 as a permanent U.S. Army post at Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park. In August 1886, the U.S. Department of the Interior transferred administration of the park to the War Department and General Philip Sheridan ordered the U.S. Army to take control of the park. The Army established Fort Yellowstone as a permanent post and remained in control of the park until 1918 when it was transferred to the National Park Service. The facilities of Fort Yellowstone now comprise the Yellowstone National Park headquarters, Horace Albright Visitor Center and staff accommodations.
