It has been estimated that between 19,500 and 50,000 Japanese military personnel surrendered to Allied forces prior to the end of the Pacific War in August 1945. The number of Japanese soldiers, sailors and airmen who surrendered was limited by the Japanese military indoctrinating its personnel to fight to the death, Allied personnel often being unwilling to take prisoners, and many Japanese soldiers believing that those who surrendered often were killed anyway. Following the war the United States and Britain delayed the repatriation of many Japanese prisoners until 1946 and 1947 respectively and the Soviet Union continued to hold hundreds of thousands of Japanese prisoners of war (POW) until the early 1950s.
