An analysis by the United Nations indicates an approximate median of 300 police officers per 100,000 inhabitants worldwide in 2006. While only nine countries worldwide disclosed police personnel values lower than 100 officers per 100,000 inhabitants. Relatively high median rates of police personnel (around 400) were observed in countries in West Asia, as well as Eastern and Southern Europe. The median rate of police personnel per population at the global level remained quite stable over the period 2002-2006, after an increase between 1995 and 2002. The United Nations recommends a minimum police strength of 222 per 100,000 people.
